Week of Oct. 19

It has been a busy week in Room RL12, but we continue to fill our days with fun and learning.  We have continued to work on telling time to the hour and on an analog clock and introduced telling time to the half hour.  We continue listen to two different songs, Let's learn about the Clock and Rock and Tell the Time on the Clock, as well as, Telling Time to the half-hour.  Here is a link to a time telling game on ABCYA, Time Travel: Learn to Tell time that you can use to support your children at home in a fun way.  Telling time to the half hour is a bit more challenging, so we will continue next week working on this skill.

This week we also started a new literacy activity.  We have read three different books: The sad, sad, Monster, Let's get Pizza, and How many bites?  Students have taken a sentence from each story, created a sentence strip, cut it out, glued it into their literacy books, and have drawn a picture to represent the sentence strip.  This has been a wonderful learning experience for your children and they are always very motivated to complete this.  Furthermore, each story has accompanying multiple choice comprehension questions that students must answer.  One question from How many bites? that I encourage you to ask your child is:

What did Taylor not want to eat? 

- Meat

- Everything

- Corn 

- Broccoli

- Thursday, October 28th is Fun Lunch day.  Orders are due no later than tomorrow, October 22.

- Thursday, October 28th - Spooky Stories with Flashlights

- Friday, October 29th - Halloween Dress-up & Pumpkin Patch | Students are welcomed to bring a pumpkin from home and dress-up in costumes.

Where did this week go?

This past week we began learning how to tell time to the hour on an analog clock.  We have been listening to two different songs, Let's learn about the Clock  and Rock and Tell the Time on the Clock.   We have also used the SMARTboard to interact with some clocks moving the hours into the proper position.  Friday was our first time visiting the Learning Commons this year to borrow books.  We spent this week reading stories and watching short videos about going to a library, manners in the library, borrowing books.  Some students connected their own experiences of going to the Calgary Public Library and our social story, I can go to the Library. Lastly, IPPs were sent home in your child's backpack Friday, October 15th.  I will be available to  meet with families virtually to discuss your child's IPP for this term.  Time slots for these meetings include each day after school from 3:15pm - 4:30pm (including Monday) and Friday from 12:45pm - 3:30...

A short week!

It may have been a short week, but we did accomplish quite a bit.  This week we continued to learn about creating colours.  We used the following link, Creating Colours, to practice mixing colours and this was a very fun and successful activity for the students.  We also completed two different experiments where students were excited and engaged.  The first experiment we completed was the  Skittles Experiment .  We watched the following video,  Skittles experiment video  to get everyone excited.   One group used warm water and the other group cold water.  Before completing the experiment, students had to guess whose Skittle experiment would happen fastest.  The second experiment we completed was the  Walking  water experiment .  While this experiment needed more time to complete, we were able to improvise and show the students how colours can mix. We keep on trucking along!

Over the past week, we have continued to wrap up our learning of the five senses.  Students are creating pages for each of the five senses and looking through magazines to find pictures that are representative of each sense.  We also added to our learning about different cultural celebrations and spent Tuesday ringing in the Year of the Tiger.  We read two different books, discussed different symbols that represent good luck (the colour red), and created Chinese lanterns. Students got to continue practicing their cutting skills by using target lines to create the 3D shape.   Lastly, we also began Drum Fit in Gym.  The students really enjoy this activity and some students have led us through their own dance moves.  Please find one of the videos that we have been watching for Drum Fit here .  Next week, we will continue to see if we can design a routine with at least three different dance steps.
