Where did September go?
Hard to believe that September has already come and gone! It has been a really fun month as the students continue to develop personal, trusting relationships with each of us. This was the first week where we started walking our new route each morning.
Also, this past week we spent some time each day focusing on stories that help us understand why we are recognizing the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. We read two different stories; Shin Chi's Canoe and When I was Eight. We used the pictures in the book to help interpret how it felt to go to a Residential school and we examined and discussed what we noticed was the same about each story. We chose specific information that we could help students connect to their own lives. For example, we discussed how the children had their hair cut, their names changed, how far away from their homes they had to go to school, and that they slept at their schools each night from September to June.
As we move forward into October we have some exciting, new opportunities coming up. Our students have really enjoyed collecting the recycling throughout the school and it has led to our students meeting new teachers and other students within our school community. As such, starting this month, students will begin collecting the library books from each class in the school. I am excited for this opportunity to continue exploring and expanding different vocational tasks within the school. Students will push a cart to collect returned library books and then return them to the library to be sorted and checked in.
Another exciting and much talked about event in our class is having Tim Horton's donuts next week. With COVID preventing us from walking to Tim Horton's, we decided to bring Tim Horton's to the school. We will set-up our own little donut shop in the lunch window next Thursday, October 7th. Students will use their learning about Canadian coins to purchase a donut. Students will choose a donut from a menu and read how much the donut costs. They will then order their donut from our "Tim Horton's employee" exchanging their money for a donut. Look for photos next week!
